I have a few children animation DVDs that I’ve ripped to my PC hard drive, the movies are in video_ts folders. The original DVDs were scratched beyond repair and I’ve thrown them away. I recently found out that my Roku 3 cannot stream from video_ts folders, so I used Freemake to convert them to MP4. All the MP4s that I made played great using Roku 3 (I connected a portable hard drive to the Roku 3). However, there was one movie that has no audio, only video. Almost all the video we watch, over digital terrestrial TV, over cable, from satellite, or over the Internet, is compressed. Raw, uncompressed video is just too big and would waste too much bandwidth. You may know about many popular safe torrent sites, such as The Pirate Bay, Kickass, etc., but may not know about YIFY. So I watched a YouTube of some dude casting his Gear VR screen to a TV, so of course a few hours later I’m back from Best Buy hooking mine up. My test Chromecasting Blu-ray ISO from Gear VR onto my PlasmaTV was cool so that I want to share my experience here.



I do own a large Blu-ray collection (a few DVDs) and all the discs are save in ISO on my 4TB external drive. ISO file plays the same as original disc and not as scratchy as physical discs; it also help me make room for the storage at home. So my test started in two steps:

I have just bought a DVD disc: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and I want to get my movie streamed to my Sumvision Cyclone Micro Media Player from NAS via DLNA for them (I have two DLNA certified meida players, one is Sumvision Cyclone in the living room in the first floor, and the other is WDTV in the second floor), in that way, when my family members will watch their beloved movie upstairs and downstairs respectively, they did not have chance to ruin my DVD discs anymore carelessly. I have a collection of family DVD movies, but some of them have scratched and unable to watch. I bought my very first 3D TV The M701d a week ago at Costco. It is the second largest LED TV in the M series for 2013/2014. The 2D picture looks great and it also has a very nice deep rich 3D quality picture. But right away I noticed some cross talking on the bottom part of the screen when I watched John Carter and The Hobbit, mostly when there was subtitling. I saw it really bad when watching Wreck-It Ralph last night. Depending on the depth of the 3D image, the cross talking is extremely noticeable on the bottom half of the screen. Watching a 16:9 movie, like The Avengers, is almost unbearable. It is a movie in Blu-ray disc.

I’d consider myself a home entertainment enthusiast, as such I’m quite finicky when it comes to audio and video quality. I would happily drop out my LED TV and replace it with the BenQ W1080ST. The W1080ST delivered high quality and bright video, for as long as you were not shining a direct light at it.

And a few days before, I’ve purchased many 3D blu-ray movies, I wonder if my BenQ W1080ST projector directly play 3D blu-ray with 3D effect keeping? Is it necessary to hook up a Blu-ray player to it? I only have two options to hooking it up to a blu-ray player: S-video or that yellow video plug. No optical or DVI or HDMI plugs. I would really like to know before I go and spend a lot of money on a Blu-ray player.

In this day and age, everyone wants high-definiton content, and that means they either have to download the new 1080p video from iTunes or watch some Blu-Rays on their HDTV. Sadly, Macs still don’t sport Blu-Ray drives and probably never will, so why bother? I am well aware of the whole “Windows doesn’t support Blu Ray” thing and Cyberlink’s software (the stuff that came with my Blu Ray drive) doesn’t always work for me.
