Question: Creating 3D Blu-ray movies to Oculus Rift DK2

I want to try watching a full movie in Rift DK2. In particular there are a few 3D Blu-ray movies that I own that I never got to experience on the big screen that I’ve always had regret about. What program are you using to create 3D Bluray movies into Oculus Rift DK2? PC or Mac? I only have a Mac computer. Every time I create them. It only plays in 2D. Any help would be much appreciated. It says 3D in top right corner of trailers and my videos but still plays in 2D. Please and thankyou.

How to convert 3D Blu-ray to watch in Oculus Rift DK2

Step 1. Import 3D Blu-ray movie

Launch the professional 3D Blu-ray to Rift DK2 converter. Click the button on top left corner to add 3D Blu-ray movie to it. Double click the video, you can preview the movie in the right side.

Step 2. Select an output format for Oculus Rift DK2

Click “Format” and find “3D Video”. there are a lot of format options for you. Here you can recommended to select “MP4 Side-by-Side 3D Video (*.mp4)” or “MKV Side-by-Side 3D Video (*.mkv)” as the output format. (Learn Differences Between Anaglyph 3D and Side-by-Side 3D)

Tip: Click “Settings” button to do corresponding settings regarding to video, audio. Note that Rift DK2 compatible audio has to be encoded in AAC or MP3. AC3 audio and DTS Dolby don’t seem to work. Plus, in this Profile Settings window, you can also select 3D Anaglyph and 3D Depth.

And for ripping 3D Blu-ray to view on Oculus Rift DK2, 2D/3D videos for the Cinema app should be in 1080p (1920*1080) with a higher bitrate around 5mbit/s. Higher resolutions for the specific format doesn’t make the quality better but are a waste of power and battery life.

Step 3. Start to convert 3D Blu-ray to Rift DK2

1. Select Oculus as extended Desktop in the Rift Display Mode Program.

2. Make sure your windows monitor is setup so your rift is secondary.

3. Options for watching 3D movies:

Menu – Media – Format – Side by Side

Menu – Media – Projection – Plane

4.Options for common 2D movies:

Menu – Media – Format – Mono

Menu – Media – Projection – Plane

5. Open selected movies:

Menu – File – Open File – With VLC…

6. Browse and select the movie you desire to watch.

7. Switch to Oculus screen:

When the movie is playing, move the video screen onto your Oculus screen with the instructions: In the Oculus is your second monitor to the left, hit these keys:

Hit Windows Key + Cursor Key Left (Do this twice to move the window to your Oculus)

Hit Windows Key + Cursor Key Up (This maximizes the window)

8. Put on your headphones and enjoy movies on Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 DK2 with pleasure.
